James Dean’s Pocket watch will be auctioned off in Hong Kong

At the end of this month, June 22, 2013 to be exact, Actor,James Dean’s pocket watch will be auctioned off by Antiquorum Auctioneers in Hong Kong.

As a young actor in New York in 1951, James Dean purchased an Elgin pocket watch, simultaneously his career was starting to take off. This pocket watch was considered a “lucky watch” by the actor as he was superstitious and became his good luck charm. In the movie East of Eden released in 1952, he is seen wearing this watch with an alternative cover in order to hide his initials “J.D”. Years after securing his status as a giant movie star, James Dean gifted this pocket watch to Ms. Tillie Starriet, a former Warner Brother’s personnel whom he called “Mom”, as a token of gratitude and appreciation for supporting him throughout his career.

Technical Details of James Dean’s Pocket WatchMade circa 1889, it is a keyless gold filled pocket watch. The case is a four-body, Bassine et Filets, with engine-turned back, cartouche with JD engraved on the front, coin-edge case band, hinged cuvette.

The dial is white enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, sunk subsidiary seconds and blued steel spade hands.

The movement is rhodium plated, 3/4 plate, with 5 jewels, straight line lever escapement, cut-bimetallic compensation balance with blued steel balance spring. Movement and case are signed and it measures 37mm.

It is accompanied by the original fitted box, chain, lamp pendant and documentation attesting to its provenance.

Estimate is $5,000 to $10,000

IWC Portuguese Platinum “Tribeca Film Festival” watch

On April 10th, 2013 the IWC Platinum Portuguese unique 1/1 “Tribeca Film Festival” watch was auctioned of in NYC by Antiquorum auctioneer’s.  This watch was estimated to fetch between $20,000-$30,000 at auction, but I am thrilled to report that this watch sold for a whopping $60,000!

IWC have done something completely remarkable by auctioning off this watch and giving 100% of the proceeds to the Tribeca Film Fund. Their belief and supports for the arts, especially in Film and the future of young film makers is such an amazing gesture of hope and gratitude. I truly commend IWC for their humanity and incredible watch making and I will continue to passionately wear their products and write about their journey.

Antiquorum Hits world record at March Auction in Geneva

Antiquorum is the world leader for luxury watch auctions. They have further solidified this by the recent March !7, 2013 auction where they hit a world record! This auction took place at the Richemond  Hotel in Geneva Switzerland where they made an estimated seven million dollars. This auction titled “Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces”  attracted 434 registered internet bidders in addition to the many room and phone bidders from around the world. Lively international bidding came from countries such as The Russian Federation, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Germany as well as Switzerland. Strong prices were achieved resulting in 80% sold by lot and 137% sold by value.

The watch that stole the show was A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite Tourbillon lot [541]. The limited edition 18K white gold wristwatch with tourbillon regulator and 36-hour power reserve inspired fierce competition amongst bidders and ultimately sold to a phone bidder for an impressive CHF 338,500

A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite Tourbillon

According to Julien Schaerer, Managing Director, Antiquorum Geneva.”We are extremely pleased by the outcome for the A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite in our March auction,” said  “Today’s results confirm that the Pour Le Merite Tourbillon continues to be one of the most prestigious and sought-after examples ever produced by A. Lange & Sohne.”

Other notable pieces include: Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2 [lot 159]. The reversible platinum watch with visible Jaeger LeCoultre caliber 174 movement and inclined two cage multi-axis spherical tourbillon attained CHF 230,500.

The iconic and timeless Rolex Ref. 6263 Paul Newman Tropical Outer Track Oyster Cosmograph [lot 534] inspired a bidding war amongst eight phone bidders and finally sold to a room bidder for an incredible CHF 212,500, over twice its high estimate.

IWC is the official time partner of the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC

IWC Portuguese 7 Day Platinum “EDITION 2013 UNIQUE PIECE”

Typically, when you think of Film Festivals you don’t think of time partners/keepers, but in the case of this years Tribeca Film Festival, luxury watch brand IWC has decided to partner up with the Tribeca Film Festivals non profit counterpart the Tribeca Film Institute to auction off a unique piece at Antiquorum Auctioneers Headquarters in NYC on April 10 2013. The entire proceeds of the sale of the watch will help support the Tribeca Film Institute.

According to IWC worldwide CEO George Kern, “We believe new voices should be heard and are convinced that projects as well as talents from Tribeca Film Institute deserve an international stage.”  This is such a great partnership for both IWC and the Tribeca Film Festival and Institute to spread the message of art, charity and expression.

IWC Schaffhausen will be auctioning off a unique Portuguese Automatic Edition “TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL 2013” One out of One timepiece.

Technical Specs

The case, in platinum, measures 42.3mm x 14mm. It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back, and it is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic IWC in-house caliber 51011 with 42 jewels, 21,600 vph and a power reserve of 168 hours (7 days). It features IWC’s patented Pellaton winding system. The rotor is done in 18kt gold with a medallion bearing the logo of the Tribeca Film Festival and the engraving “EDITION 2013 UNIQUE PIECE” For sale at auction only.

The dial is slate-colored, with claret-colored small seconds and power reserve subdials, hands and appliqués are done in rose gold.

The strap is black alligator with a platinum folding clasp.
