Panerai PAM00203

As the fluctuations in the economy and the market are getting increasingly more unpredictable and unsecure, more and more people are putting their money in tangible things like gold, silver, wine, art and watches? That’s right watches! If you think about it, watches are very transportable, you can take anywhere and some are extremely exclusive and rare and hold or increase in value. Don’t get me wrong, cars are still being purchased for luxury and status, but you can’t take that exotic expensive car with you into the board room like you can with a watch. In my opinion, watches are the ultimate luxury product that you can buy, wear, collect and five to ten years from now make money depending on what you buy and who you listen to.

A great example of this would be the Special Edition Panerai PAM00203 ,which made it’s  worldwide debut in 2005. I remember when this watch came out, I was in shock that Panerai made a special edition watch in stainless steel for the retail price of $19,900. I was blown away with how expensive that seemed at the time. They only made 150 pieces for the world. I researched it more and realized they had found 150 old 8 Day Angelus movements from the 1950’s, which Panerai refinished to modern-day specs to create this incredible Special Edition. This watch exudes Panerais DNA from the 47 mm 1950 stainless steel case, to the 8 Day original Angelus movement, to the incredible dial which has all four original Panerai Arabic Numerals,  a sub second hand next to the nine o’clock, and in Italian is written 8 days, making this completely iconic and distinctive from any other 1950 watch Panerai has ever made till today.

At it’s pinnacle, this watch has achieved record breaking numbers at auction of close to $200,000. Should you be so lucky to find one used in decent shape, your still looking at about $100,000. Talk about an amazing investment! Believe you me, if I had $20,000 lying around at that time, I totally would have done it. This goes to show you that watches are the new investment for the future, and before making that watch purchase, please consider what you are buying and who you are consulting. I am always here and will let you know my thoughts, if I can ever be of service. I feel it’s important to buy a watch because you like the way it looks and feels, but it’s equally important to buy something that holds or increases its value that you can pass down from generation to generation.

Since 1994, Omega has been a proud sponsor of the Americas Cup Racing Challenge. In support and sponsor of Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) for the 2013, Omega have released a very special watch known as the Seamaster 300M Co-Axial Chronograph ETZN Limited Edition

I recently had the privilege to play with this watch and I was blown away. Generally speaking, I like really clean and simple watches without a lot of complication, but this watch proved to be a rare exception. From the impressive stainless steel 44mm case, to the grey/black ceramic bezel, to the countdown timer and chronograph functions on the dial, this watch boasts quality, durability and heart all at the same time. The colors of red and black are used throughout the watch dominantly to reinforce Omegas brand identity as well as tie in the colors of ETZN Team Boats.

What makes this watch so easy to read is that the chronograph sub-dials are recessed, which makes the bold and classic Omega white hands and matte black dial pop, while the accents of red are a nice contrast bringing the entire theme of the watch together completely organically. The 44 mm stainless steel case is nice and thick, making it look much more substantial and sporty, while the integrated black rubber strap is comfortable and wearable in any situation.  I even like the way Omega is written on the strap in red.

Even though the movement is not completely in-house, it has a very reliable and well made 3330 movement, which is ETA based combined with a column wheel chronograph and co-axial escapement with silicon parts. The watch is also C.O.S.C. certified for accuracy.

On the underside of the watch, there is  an engraving of the ETNZ team logo and a mark that the watch is to help celebrate the 34th anniversary of the games. This watch is limited to 2013 pieces for the world which is also engraved on the case back. Finally, I am very impressed because you would think  a watch like this would easily be in the $10,000 price range, but it’s very well priced at $6,600 for a limited edition sports watch. To complete the story, Omega has included an addition stainless steel bracelet for versatility which comes packaged in the specialty box.

Rolex Day/Date II Yellow Gold champagne diamond dial diamond bezel

I can’t really say I am a huge fan of hip-hop or R&B music unless I am at a club shaking my thing after many liquor drinks, yeah right! This month, Canadian rap super star Drake is featured on the July 2013 cover of GQ wearing an 18k yellow gold Rolex Day/Date II with champagne diamond dial, diamond bezel. Rolex has always been a symbol of wealth and status that has been embraced by the hip hop community in videos and style shoots. Usually, this sort of medium can give Rolex a bad name because it can cheapen their image due to a certain type environment or person it’s placed on.

The Rolex Yellow Gold Day/Date II is hardly a watch I  would personally wear because its a bit too flashy for my liking, but in this particular situation, Drake wears this watch with style and confidence, making this style shoot look even more effortless and natural. This is a great example of the right style choice between the product and celebrity wearing it. I like the fact the the Rolex Day/Date II doesn’t look inappropriate or ghetto on Drake. He pulls it of with ease because he is masculine calm and confident and happens to be wearing the right clothes. Even though he is only 26, Drake appears more as a man than a boy. In style shoots like this, if the watch is not paired with the right celebrity, it can totally throw of the aesthetic of the entire shoot and detract from the goal. In this case, the watch is a nice accessory that compliments the overall theme. Also, the consumer looking at this photo gets a better idea of the true size and scale of the watch, giving him/her a point of reference.

Arguably, Lebron James is one of the most accomplished, talented, and influential Basketball players of all time. He recently became Two-Time NBA Champion, where he lead his Miami Heat to victory and was also crowned MVP of the NBA Finals for the second year in a row, which makes him become the third player in league history after Michael Jordan and Bill Russell to win back-to-back Finals MVP and regular-season MVP awards

According to LeBron James “I came here to win championships and to be able to go back to back, two championships in three years, so far, it’s the ultimate.”  Not only is his coach proud of his work ethic, commitment and talent to victory, but watch brand Audemars Piguet, who LeBron James is the ambassador for, congratulates their iconic ambassador and embraces this momentous victory.

Typically, when I think of a cruise ship, I don’t think about being able to purchase a fine timepiece like IWC on it . It’s official, IWC has launched their latest boutique on the Mariner of the Seas cruise ship. This is a first for IWC and quite a pioneering and bold on their part. According to IWC CEO George Kern, “We are pleased to announce the first IWC boutique to launch on a cruise ship and we look forward to welcoming guests from around the globe to experience this exciting milestone along with IWC.”

This new boutique will house all six families that IWC has in it’s collection and will combine all  the elements of dark and white wood, glass, leather and polished stainless steel, to reinforce their brand Identity, with their core values of technical ingenuity and engineering.

I would like to sincerely congratulate IWC for this amazing new venture.  Having a boutique on sea will open many opportunities for the brand to expand their market and tell their incredible story. This ship has already set sail in Asia, servicing cruises out of Singapore and Shanghai, China.

I would love to hear from you. Please fill out the contact form  below with any questions or comments

The Omega Speedmaster 42 mm Moon Watch is the best valued chronograph under five grand

Buying a decent watch today that has brand recognition and is well made for under five thousand dollars is a bit of a challenge. The average price of a good timepiece has definitely sky rocketed in the last five years. Every major luxury watch brand today is competing to own the ten thousand dollar price point.

Especially the sports watch market. Once you have features more than time and date, then the prices go out of control. I am happy to report my pic for best chronograph watch for under five thousand dollars is the Legendary Omega  Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch 42 mm.

This watch is available in a few different variations, but the ones  I like most are the historic black dial with contrasting white hands and subdials and the very cool and more sporty racing version with a black dial with contrasting white hands and subdials with an additional outer red and white checkered chapter ring.

I recently had the chance to play with the 42 mm Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch in stainless steel with red and white checkered chapter ring, and let me tell you, this is a lot of watch for the money. This watch screams sports watch with the pop and red and white color, capturing ones interests for a life time.

Usually, when a watch company messes with a classic, it can cheapen the image and identity of the watch completely. In this case, this subtle but bold nuance totally enhances the look of this true classic. I am not going to lie, 42 mm is to small for me, but for someone just getting into the watch buying market who has no idea of scale, this is an incredible watch to start a collection with. I also love the weight of this watch, you definitely know that its there, yet its not so heavy that it becomes cumbersome and painful to wear. As much as the daily wearing consumer normally would never use the chronograph feature, this this registered chronograph is very clean and legible and utilizes the functions of second hand, hours and minutes of the stop watch with ease. The stainless steel Omega Speedmaster bracelet is by far one of the most comfortable and well made watch  bracelets on the market today, while the legendary 1861 manual wind movement engages the customer with the watch to achieve that personal connection between man and machine.

Panerai PAM00446 Tourbillion Pocket Watch

I have had the honor and privilege of attending many watch events all over the world throughout the years. There are only a handful that really stick out in my mind as being truly memorable, connective and enjoyable. Last evening, June 15, 2013, was one of those events that really made an impact that I will never forget.

By now, we all know that I am a Panerai fiend. Last week, I was invited by the best boutique in Las Vegas for 2013, Panerai, to an exclusive by invitation only event at the Nobu Towers at Caesars Palace. This event was done first class from top to bottom.

The event was held at a private two-floor suite with a total of twenty five people. 12 collectors flew in from all over the world to participate in this very classy yet casual event. Panerai used this medium to kick off and celebrate the novelties of 2013 presented at SIHH in Geneva Switzerland back in January.

Also in attendance, besides the incredible staff of the Panerai Las Vegas Boutique, was North American Director of Retail, Jean-Bernard Diez who was incredibly gracious, down to earth and engaging.

What I loved most about this event was not only did Panerai showcase the new watches being released, but celebrated their collectors and made them feel a part of something very special unique and exclusive. The suite was beautifully  transformed into a very chique watch salon, with food prepared by world-renowned sushi house Nobu, while the drinks were flowing in abundance, as collectors were mingling and trying on the novelties and creating an amazing energy around the brand by their in-depth passionate conversations and humor.

I have never seen a watch brand evoke so much emotion, passion and connection as Panerai. From my experience, collectors stay for the food and drink and then leave as soon as there is no more food and drink to be had. In this case, collectors wanted to stay longer and talk more and hang out together, The event started around 7pm and everybody left around almost 1 in the morning.

Unlike other events from the past, this event proved that the product was definitely the hero.  The new product for 2013 is absolutely amazing. Collectors responded very well to it. Many pictures and wrist shots were taken. Subsequently, I am sure orders we already placed.  I was very impressed with the new Submersible Bronzo Power Reserve, PAM00507, retails for $13,200, which is strange because I didn’t really think I would like it.  What I really came to see was it’s darker brother, PAM00508 , the 1950 Submersible Ceramica. retails for $17,500.  I liked it, but was not overly impressed to be honest. The watch looks smaller in an all black finish and the strap is tapered, making this watch look less stealth and masculine. Even though both watches are exactly the same size of 47 mm, the Bronzo feels bigger, looks more historic and just has a more versatile aesthetic over all. Other pieces on hand, included the new PAM00510, which will eventually replace the iconic PAM00111, as well as the new Regatta Flyback in Titanium with 1950 case, PAM00526 and many others.

I would like to sincerely thank Gari Arevalo, Panerai Las Vegas Boutique Manager and his entire staff for putting on an incredibly stellar event second to none, which brought together collectors from all over the world, to experience Panerai on an intimate level, like they have never experienced before.
