It’s hard to believe that Breitling released their incredible cool and iconic Emergency watch 18 years ago in 1995. Man, do I feel old. This year for Basel 2013, Breitling released their Emergency II watch after 5 years of major developement and research to make major advancements to this incredible device.

The Breitling Emergency watch was the first wrist watch produced to save lives by transmitting a distress signal by pulling out an antenna. This new version is bigger, better and completely redesigned. This watch is available in three colors: black dial, orange dial and yellow dial.

The waiting is finally over, the most anticipated watch in the world gets released at Basel 2013.  Yes, the new Rolex Daytona gets revealed and it is absolutely stunning. The only problem for me is that it’s Platinum which means it will be way out of my league in pricing.

I totally respect that Rolex wanted to do something special to honor this iconic legendary watch, but at the same time making it more in the $10,000-20,000 range would have been so much better for me and even that would be stretch. At the same time, Rolex is absolutely smart because the message is very clear that if you really want this watch you have to be in an elite exclusive circle to be able to attain one.

Lets get to the watch. This watch is solid Platinum with a brand new Rolex hazel brown ceramic bezel, with an ice blue dial and chestnut brown lacquer counters for the subdials. When you think individually about each color and the pairing choices they made for this watch, one may think, WTF? Actually, the pairing of all these colors is genius and still incorporates Rolex DNA to the end. Ice Blue is a dial option available on the Platinum Day/Date. This bold move makes this Rolex Daytona distinctive from any other Daytona being produced today. Then as we get to the ceramic bezel and subdials, which are chestnut brown in color, certainly an unusual choice but the contrast between the ice blue dial makes it very easy to read and very easy on the eyes to look at. This is historic for Rolex because it’s the first time in 50 years they have executed a Daytona in Platinum.

The watch is equipped with a very technical but simple Rolex 4130 Calibre movement. This is a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex. The construction of this movement calls for far fewer parts than a standard chronograph, which as a result totally enhances the movements performance and reliability.

Finally, the Rolex Daytona is fitted with a solid Platinum link bracelet and safety clasp. This oysterlock folding clasp prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also a Rolex exclusive. This functional and genious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort under any circumstance.

Glashutte Original new Senator Panorama Date red gold

Glashutte Original to me is the benchmark of German Watchmaking. This is probably one of the single most undervalued brands in the entire watch industry, especially for in an in-house luxury watch manufacture.

This year at Basel 2013, Glashutte Original have decided to launch the newly re-designed Senator collection in Red Gold and in Steel with Panorama Date and Panorama Date with moon phase. I am absolutely in love with this new re-design because it looks completely new and they have taken the world of modern and classic to produce the ultimate re-invention.

They have achieved this by subtle yet important changes to the bezel dial and case. The bezel has been recessed  to make room for a lacquered silver-grain dial whose finely textured sets the stage for bold black roman numerals and a timeless black railroad chapter ring.

These new watch cases are 40mm in diameter, with both polished and brushed surfaces, either in red gold or stainless steel. Crystals are sapphire and the matt black Louisiana alligator strap comes with a fold-ver clasp in gold or steel. A stainless steel bracelet is also available.

The Panorama date display is presented in black on an ivory ground matching the color of the dial, and new blued-steel “poire” shaped hands enhance it. The previous versions of the Panorama Date used a button at 8 o’clock to reset the second-hand to zero; the new version replaces the button with a corrector inset in the case.

This new interpretation of the Senator Panorama Date Moon Phase display features a polished silver moon moving on a deep blue disk representing the sky.

What drives this incredibly technical German machine is in-house automatic caliber 100-03, the Senator Panorama Date Moon Phase by the caliber 100-04, both with a 55 hour power reserve. The caliber 100 family features a screw balance with 18 weighted gold-coated screws, twin spring barrels, swan-neck fine adjustment, skeletonized 21kt rotor, and the exquisite finishing characteristics of the manufactory.

The most amazing part is that you don’t have to pay more for the new collection because the prices on all these brand new models will be the same as what the current retail prices are for the current collection.

I just wanted to clarify for any of you out there how Baselworld in Basel Switzerland works. Every major watch brand exhibits in Baselworld every year to showcase their latest creations. This Fair is for retailers all over the world to see what the newest releases are and to place orders for the year for their store/stores as most of these brand have allocations.

Unless, you’re a member of the press or some how invited by the brand, the public is not allowed to go into these magnificent booths that the watch brands spend millions of dollars on to put on the event of the year. However, unlike other watch Fairs and Baselworld by far being the biggest ans surely one of the most important in the world, the general public is allowed to purchase day and group passes. You can definitely look from the outside of all these amazing booths where you can see the newest novelties in the windows.   This year Baselworld starts on April 25 and ends May 2 2013.  To get all the information you need on specifics for Baselworld 2013 please click here

What will Rolex do for the 50th anniversary of the stainless steel Daytona at Basel 2013 ?

Current Rolex Daytona

This year is a landmark year for watches, especially for the mighty king that is Rolex. At Basel 2013 this year which is quickly approaching us, not only will Rolex introduce the new novelties for this year, but they will be unveiling the 50th Anniversary Rolex Daytona model. That’s right! The most iconic watch in the world has turned 50 and everybody is speculating what will Rolex do for the 50th Anniversary of the Stainless Steel Rolex Daytona?

Anytime Rolex does a 50th Anniversary model, it usually implies they will be adding the color Rolex Green to a special edition piece. The speculation is that the current 40 mm Daytona will be replaced with a new version in 44 mm with a ceramic bezel. I have heard they may do a special edition white gold model with green hands for the Chronograph registers for the 50th anniversary.

Speculate all you want because Rolex is so tight lipped, that no one will ever know till the first day of the Basel Fair what Rolex is doing.  This is the genius of Rolex, who keep the most avid collector guessing about every single aspect of the watch that it almost becomes a different brand and creates a hysteria around it. In my opinion, it  really doesn’t matter what Rolex does because they create trends not follow them. I mean they could have the dial made of Ketchup and there would be a waiting list for years to come, that’s how powerful Rolex is!
