According to LeBron James “I came here to win championships and to be able to go back to back, two championships in three years, so far, it’s the ultimate.”  Not only is his coach proud of his work ethic, commitment and talent to victory, but watch brand Audemars Piguet, who LeBron James is the ambassador for, congratulates their iconic ambassador and embraces this momentous victory.

LeBron James is the embodiment of Audemars Piguet Brand philosophy “to break the rules, you must first master them”. Typically, when I think of a cruise ship, I don’t think about being able to purchase a fine timepiece like IWC on it . It’s official, IWC has launched their latest boutique on the Mariner of the Seas cruise ship. This is a first for IWC and quite a pioneering and bold on their part. According to IWC CEO George Kern, “We are pleased to announce the first IWC boutique to launch on a cruise ship and we look forward to welcoming guests from around the globe to experience this exciting milestone along with IWC.”

This new boutique will house all six families that IWC has in it’s collection and will combine all  the elements of dark and white wood, glass, leather and polished stainless steel, to reinforce their brand Identity, with their core values of technical ingenuity and engineering.

I would like to sincerely congratulate IWC for this amazing new venture.  Having a boutique on sea will open many opportunities for the brand to expand their market and tell their incredible story. This ship has already set sail in Asia, servicing cruises out of Singapore and Shanghai, China.

The Omega Speedmaster 42 mm Moon Watch is the best valued chronograph under five grand

Buying a decent watch today that has brand recognition and is well made for under five thousand dollars is a bit of a challenge. The average price of a good timepiece has definitely sky rocketed in the last five years. Every major luxury watch brand today is competing to own the ten thousand dollar price point.

Especially the sports watch market. Once you have features more than time and date, then the prices go out of control. I am happy to report my pic for best chronograph watch for under five thousand dollars is the Legendary Omega  Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch 42 mm.

This watch is available in a few different variations, but the ones  I like most are the historic black dial with contrasting white hands and subdials and the very cool and more sporty racing version with a black dial with contrasting white hands and subdials with an additional outer red and white checkered chapter ring.

I recently had the chance to play with the 42 mm Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch in stainless steel with red and white checkered chapter ring, and let me tell you, this is a lot of watch for the money. This watch screams sports watch with the pop and red and white color, capturing ones interests for a life time.

Usually, when a watch company messes with a classic, it can cheapen the image and identity of the watch completely. In this case, this subtle but bold nuance totally enhances the look of this true classic. I am not going to lie, 42 mm is to small for me, but for someone just getting into the watch buying market who has no idea of scale, this is an incredible watch to start a collection with. I also love the weight of this watch, you definitely know that its there, yet its not so heavy that it becomes cumbersome and painful to wear. As much as the daily wearing consumer normally would never use the chronograph feature, this this registered chronograph is very clean and legible and utilizes the functions of second hand, hours and minutes of the stop watch with ease. The stainless steel Omega Speedmaster bracelet is by far one of the most comfortable and well made watch  bracelets on the market today, while the legendary 1861 manual wind movement engages the customer with the watch to achieve that personal connection between man and machine.

Panerai PAM00446 Tourbillion Pocket Watch

I have had the honor and privilege of attending many watch events all over the world throughout the years. There are only a handful that really stick out in my mind as being truly memorable, connective and enjoyable. Last evening, June 15, 2013, was one of those events that really made an impact that I will never forget.

By now, we all know that I am a Panerai fiend. Last week, I was invited by the best boutique in Las Vegas for 2013, Panerai, to an exclusive by invitation only event at the Nobu Towers at Caesars Palace. This event was done first class from top to bottom.

The event was held at a private two-floor suite with a total of twenty five people. 12 collectors flew in from all over the world to participate in this very classy yet casual event. Panerai used this medium to kick off and celebrate the novelties of 2013 presented at SIHH in Geneva Switzerland back in January.

Also in attendance, besides the incredible staff of the Panerai Las Vegas Boutique, was North American Director of Retail, Jean-Bernard Diez who was incredibly gracious, down to earth and engaging.

What I loved most about this event was not only did Panerai showcase the new watches being released, but celebrated their collectors and made them feel a part of something very special unique and exclusive. The suite was beautifully  transformed into a very chique watch salon, with food prepared by world-renowned sushi house Nobu, while the drinks were flowing in abundance, as collectors were mingling and trying on the novelties and creating an amazing energy around the brand by their in-depth passionate conversations and humor.

I have never seen a watch brand evoke so much emotion, passion and connection as Panerai. From my experience, collectors stay for the food and drink and then leave as soon as there is no more food and drink to be had. In this case, collectors wanted to stay longer and talk more and hang out together, The event started around 7pm and everybody left around almost 1 in the morning.

Unlike other events from the past, this event proved that the product was definitely the hero.  The new product for 2013 is absolutely amazing. Collectors responded very well to it. Many pictures and wrist shots were taken. Subsequently, I am sure orders we already placed.  I was very impressed with the new Submersible Bronzo Power Reserve, PAM00507, retails for $13,200, which is strange because I didn’t really think I would like it.  What I really came to see was it’s darker brother, PAM00508 , the 1950 Submersible Ceramica. retails for $17,500.  I liked it, but was not overly impressed to be honest. The watch looks smaller in an all black finish and the strap is tapered, making this watch look less stealth and masculine. Even though both watches are exactly the same size of 47 mm, the Bronzo feels bigger, looks more historic and just has a more versatile aesthetic over all. Other pieces on hand, included the new PAM00510, which will eventually replace the iconic PAM00111, as well as the new Regatta Flyback in Titanium with 1950 case, PAM00526 and many others.

I would like to sincerely thank Gari Arevalo, Panerai Las Vegas Boutique Manager and his entire staff for putting on an incredibly stellar event second to none, which brought together collectors from all over the world, to experience Panerai on an intimate level, like they have never experienced before.

Richard Mille is coming to Las Vegas

Crystals Shopping Mall  at City Center in Las Vegas is one of the most high-end retail shopping experiences in the world . They house every major fashion and luxury maison from Louis Vuitton to Paul Smith to Swatch Tourbillon and many others. Very soon, iconic and technical watch brand, Richard Mille will open its second US Boutique here.

Richard Mille opened its first US Boutique in Beverly Hills in 2010. I remember what a big deal that was considering the troubled  economy and how niche this brand is. With introductory price points of $50,000 and up, one would think, who can afford it? Believe me, in Vegas anything goes. This is the perfect location for Richard Mille to have its presence in the United States because Vegas is opulent and outlandish.

When you walk into Crystals, the Richard Mille Construction wall is up with a very cool image of Richard Mille watches and silhouettes of construction workers and writing under Richard Mille that just says “soon”. This state of the art boutique will use interesting materials like Makassar wood, Corian stone, leather, steel and anti-reflective glass to assemble an innovative  boutique to house their incredibly technical and exotic timepieces. Due to the high value of these watches and exclusivity, this new boutique will have a separate area for their VIP guests.  Once this boutique is completed, this will be Richard Mille’s fifteenth boutique worldwide.

A close look at the Blancpain Villeret Red Gold Chinese Calendar

Wrist shot of the Blancpain Villeret red gold Chinese Calendar

I had the amazing opportunity to see the highly anticipated Blancpain Villeret Chinese Calendar in Red Gold. This watch is absolutely incredible. I will be honest, I am normally not the biggest fan in the world of Blancpain watches, but the execution of this Chinese calendar is so well finished from start to finish, that I had to write about it.

This high polished red gold 45 mm case is the perfect size to house this incredibly complicated movement. The gleaming white enamel dial is the most appropriate canvas to display the Chinese and Gregorian Calendar and moon phase complications in contrasting black lacquered writing. The combination of the Chinese and Gregorian Calendars on a wristwatch is a worlds first, technically executed by Blancpain.

For this herculean technical feat, Blancpain devised a mechanism to display the intricate 60 year cycle of zodiac, elements and yin/yang. The Chinese Calendar is “Lunisolar” with corrections in the form of leap months and adjustments to the length of months. This incredibly elaborate self-winding movement system is comprised of 463 parts. Some may think a watch of this magnitude may be just as complex to set as manufacture, but Blancpain made this easier for the wearer by being able to perform and set most of these functions with the crown. The rest of the corrections between the two calendars can be implemented through 5 of Blancpains patented under lug correctors.  These correctors are located under all four watch lugs and the fifth is located subtly in the case back in the 9 o’clock position. As a result of Blancpains pioneering technical ingenuity, these correctors may be used at any time of day or night without damaging this complicated calendar system.

With watches of this nature, it’s a normality within the industry to provide the end-user with warning instruction of the times of day when the calendar can or can’t be set. What amazes me most about the Blancpain Villeret Chinese Calendar, is there are no issues of this ever occurring, because when any of the under lug correctors are pushed, first disconnects the portion of the movement which would be engaged to advance the indication automatically with the running of the watch, removing any possibility that the manual change will disturb the automatic advance.

One would think a watch like this is too dressy and to expensive to wear everyday. I beg to differ, because even though the watch is not numbered, the size and exclusive nature of this watch are not for the pedestrian consumer, but for one with sophistication, attention to detail and appreciation for high horology, making it easier to wear everyday than you would imagine.

Should you have interest in purchasing a timepiece as fine as this, please don’t hesitate to email me at amitdevhanda@gmail.com or call me 702.608.0251. I will be happy to be of service

On Sunday, June 9, 2013, Rafael Nadel officially became a legend, as he is the first tennis player in the world to win the French Open, 2013, for the eighth time. Rafael Nadal has been in partnership with uber luxury and exotic watch brand Richard Mille since 2010, where he has worn an RM watch at every tournament he has participated in, testing it’s limits and shock resistance.

The Panerai PAM00111 will evolve into the PAM00510

Panerai PAM00111

Screen shot 2013-06-10 at 1.40.04 PM

Panerai PAM00510

I think its safe to say that I have a mild obsession with Panerai watches. This is the only brand that I can say I have owned more than two different models of. I have owned a total of 5 Panerai watches since my fixation started in 2002. Today, I only have one watch and that is the coveted  Panerai PAM00372.

I have closely followed Panerais journey since the very beginning. I am extremely impressed with their commitment to pushing the envelope by releasing new novelties, digging deep into the archives to revive some sleeping giants, and using innovation to stay in-house and current while maintaining brand identity.

The watch that started it all for Panerai and was the icon from the beginning is the Panerai PAM00111. This is the watch that was used in all their original ad campaigns from Day 1. The Luminor Marina is to Panerai as the Submariner is to Rolex. Even though the PAM00111 is very much in the current Panerai collection, this watch will be phased out and replaced with an entirely new reference number, movement, dial and strap , known as the PAM00510.  The current PAM00111 has a hand wound movement, a sandwich dial, 44 mm stainless steel case, and is fitted on a tan strap, and retails for $6,800.

The new Pam00510 will retail for only $400 more than the current PAM00111, at a retail of $7,200, which is impressive considering it has an entirely new movement which is entirely in-house and manufactured by Panerai. This is a historic and technical milestone for Panerai, because it’s the first time that Panerai will be using the new P5000 hand wound 8 day movement in any of their watches. The only thing I am not crazy about on this watch is that above the six o’clock position, between where Panerai is written on the dial, they have decided to write 8 days. This definitely changes the aesthetic of the dial completely and doesn’t look as clean as the PAM00111, but only time will tell what the reception  to this will be. Personally, I am a less is more kind of guy, but some people may actually like this new addition to the dial. This watch is also fitted with a new black strap with contrasting white stitching. Hopefully, this watch should deliver before the holidays around Christmas time 2013.

Today, Panerai is 70% manufactured in-house movements 30% other movements. The new PAM00510 is the next logical step that will assist Panerai in becoming 100% in house manufacturer within the next few years. Those of you who want a piece of early Panerai still can with the Panerai PAM00111. It will only be around for a little while longer, I guarantee that once its discontinued and sold out, it will become seriously collectible.
