The Best Watch Company Website In The World for 2013 is IWC

As we are in a digital age and most of the luxury watch brands have a strong presence online, for some reason it seems like most of them are very hard to navigate around and not user-friendly at all. You almost feel like you need a degree to know about the brand before you go to their website. I am happy to give my award for Best watch company website in the world for 2013 to IWC.

Like their incredible watches, this website is very clean and intuitive yet unassuming and provides the reader with in-depth information without being patronizing . The IWC website is one of the most useful watch websites I have ever been on.  They provide an extremely detailed and accurate representation of the current collection with pictures, technical specs and yes pricing. In my opinion there is nothing more annoying than calling a boutique or shop for a price, especially when the person on the other end of the line doesn’t have a clue what they are talking about.  IWC definitely stands out from the rest and if you want to get lost in the world of IWC and learn about their history, get the latest news, events, become a member or get connected to their concierge service you can do all of it here

I would sincerely like to congratulate IWC for winning the award for Best Watch Website for 2013 and providing amazing service, quality and information!

Hublot and Depeche Mode team up to support Charity: Water

Water Shortage is a global resource problem that we should all work at making available for everybody on the planet.  On March 18th it was announced by Luxury watch manufacture Hublot and really cool British Band Depeche Mode  will be working together in partnership to support Charity Water.

Charity:Water is a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands New Wave electronic of all time and this is the second time they are teaming up with Hublot to do something charitable for a great cause. This unique initiative is part of the Depeche Mode 2013-2014 Delta Machine Tour. As Charity Partner, Hublot has designed a watch especially for this history-making collaboration: the Limited Edition Big Bang Depeche Mode.

Even more important, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each watch will go directly to charity: water. The Big Bang Depeche Mode will be launched with an international advertising campaign to coincide with the band’s 2013 summer European tour.

According to Depeche Modes Martin Gore :”I have personally been a supporter and advocate of charity: water for a while now, so I’m thrilled that we as a band can expand our support for the organization and help to make significant difference in places around the world struggling without a proper supply of drinking water.”

Hublot worldwide CEO and legend Jean Claude Biver added “:No Water, no Life! Water is life and water should be available to everybody. Nobody should suffer from a lack of water. That’s why we try to help to share water. Sharing water means sharing life and sharing love.”

Scott Harrison of Charity Water  concluded: “charity: water is honored to build a multi-faceted partnership with Hublot and Depeche Mode over the next year. The support of these two amazing partners will help bring clean, safe drinking water to thousands of people in developing countries while driving awareness about the water issue on a global scale.”

IWC turns the Portuguese Chronograph into a classic

Since the late thirties and early nineteen forties, Luxury watch brand IWC has been making the Portuguese model. This particular model exudes timeless understated sophistication. The current IWC Portuguese Chronograph Model is available in stainless steel as well as red gold. The movement of the watch is not in-house and the displacement of the subdials crowds the number six and 12 cutting the arabic numerals off which has been a huge point of contention amongst collectors and watch enthusiasts alike. The case size is 40.9 mm which is a good size, but a little small for my liking. This watch has 44 hour power reserve and the watch has been one of their staple pieces in their core collection for years.

IWC just released the new Portuguese Chronograph Classic. The watch has been re-designed in every way from the case, dial and movement. The case is still available in red gold and stainless steel like the original. The size of the case has now gone to 42 mm size and comes in silver dial and ardoise dial variations. The dial has been completely redesigned and cleaned up, as the numbers six and twelve have been removed to make more room for the vertical subdials making it cleaner more legible. As there is more space, an added complication of date has been place at the thee o’clock position of the dial making it more classic and functional.

The new IWC Portuguese Chronograph Classic  has been fitted with an in-house movement, the IWC-manufactured 89361 calibre. The movement was developed specially to show stopped times up to 12 hours on a separate subdial, which can be read off like the time of day.  The rotor, decorated with Geneva stripes, can be seen through the transparent sapphire-glass back. All models are supplied with a Santoni strap made of alligator leather.

I love everything about this new classic Portuguese model. The improvements were definitely much-needed and welcome from a practical and technical standpoint. The price is the only thing that bugs me. The new steel model is $14,400 while the original model which is $7,900. The new red gold model is $24,200 while the original is $16,400. I know they are really two different models, but I just don’t know if the changes made to the new model justifies almost a 40 percent price difference but only time will tell.

Antiquorum Hits world record at March Auction in Geneva

Antiquorum is the world leader for luxury watch auctions. They have further solidified this by the recent March !7, 2013 auction where they hit a world record! This auction took place at the Richemond  Hotel in Geneva Switzerland where they made an estimated seven million dollars. This auction titled “Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces”  attracted 434 registered internet bidders in addition to the many room and phone bidders from around the world. Lively international bidding came from countries such as The Russian Federation, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Germany as well as Switzerland. Strong prices were achieved resulting in 80% sold by lot and 137% sold by value.

The watch that stole the show was A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite Tourbillon lot [541]. The limited edition 18K white gold wristwatch with tourbillon regulator and 36-hour power reserve inspired fierce competition amongst bidders and ultimately sold to a phone bidder for an impressive CHF 338,500

A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite Tourbillon

According to Julien Schaerer, Managing Director, Antiquorum Geneva.”We are extremely pleased by the outcome for the A. Lange & Sohne Pour Le Merite in our March auction,” said  “Today’s results confirm that the Pour Le Merite Tourbillon continues to be one of the most prestigious and sought-after examples ever produced by A. Lange & Sohne.”

Other notable pieces include: Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2 [lot 159]. The reversible platinum watch with visible Jaeger LeCoultre caliber 174 movement and inclined two cage multi-axis spherical tourbillon attained CHF 230,500.

The iconic and timeless Rolex Ref. 6263 Paul Newman Tropical Outer Track Oyster Cosmograph [lot 534] inspired a bidding war amongst eight phone bidders and finally sold to a room bidder for an incredible CHF 212,500, over twice its high estimate.

Chef Tyler Florence favorite watch is Panerai

I have been a real fan of celebrity chef Tyler Florence for quite some time. Originally, I started watching his show years ago on the food network because of the incredible watches he wore. To be honest, I didn’t really even care about the food at that time. I became a fan because I am a watch guy and to me Tyler Florence represented the everyday guy teaching people how to cook, but the food was secondary.  He wasnt’ afraid to immerse his hands in a pot full of all kinds of ingredients while wearing an IWC Big Pilot’s watch in stainless steel. That was really cool to me and meant he wasn’t afraid to wear his watches.

Honestly, I think chefs get a really bad rap, because some of them can be real dicks, but Tyler Florence has to be one of the nicest, most genuine people I have had the opportunity to have an encounter with.

Last year before the holidays, I saw him on Jimmy Fallon wearing a Rolex Deep Sea on a Nato strap. This prompted me to reach out to him on Twitter and tell him that I thought he has great taste in watches and I also asked him what his favorite watch is ? Even though I kind of knew it could be a long shot that I would get a response back because he is a very busy man, world-renowned and has a huge following, he graciously responded.  His favorite watch is the Panerai PAM00279 which came out in 2004, This watch is A 42 mm Panerai Radiomir in steel   The watch is a GMT Alarm with the Girard Perregaux Traveler II movement.  Not only did he tell me what his favorite watch is, but he was nice enough to send me a wrist shot of it with the description and amount of pieces made.

What makes him even cooler is that he is someone who truly loves what he does, has incredible passion for the culinary arts, loves the finer things in life, yet he is very relatable humble and a hell of a nice guy.  I wish him nothing but continued success and happiness and I really hope one day I have a chance to interview him on what sparked his watch addiction. Let’s see, you just never know in life what’s around the corner.

Glashutte Original to me is the benchmark of German Watchmaking. This is probably one of the single most undervalued brands in the entire watch industry, especially for in an in-house luxury watch manufacture.

This year at Basel 2013, Glashutte Original have decided to launch the newly re-designed Senator collection in Red Gold and in Steel with Panorama Date and Panorama Date with moon phase. I am absolutely in love with this new re-design because it looks completely new and they have taken the world of modern and classic to produce the ultimate re-invention.

They have achieved this by subtle yet important changes to the bezel dial and case. The bezel has been recessed  to make room for a lacquered silver-grain dial whose finely textured sets the stage for bold black roman numerals and a timeless black railroad chapter ring.

These new watch cases are 40mm in diameter, with both polished and brushed surfaces, either in red gold or stainless steel. Crystals are sapphire and the matt black Louisiana alligator strap comes with a fold-ver clasp in gold or steel. A stainless steel bracelet is also available.

The Panorama date display is presented in black on an ivory ground matching the color of the dial, and new blued-steel “poire” shaped hands enhance it. The previous versions of the Panorama Date used a button at 8 o’clock to reset the second-hand to zero; the new version replaces the button with a corrector inset in the case.

This new interpretation of the Senator Panorama Date Moon Phase display features a polished silver moon moving on a deep blue disk representing the sky.

What drives this incredibly technical German machine is in-house automatic caliber 100-03, the Senator Panorama Date Moon Phase by the caliber 100-04, both with a 55 hour power reserve. The caliber 100 family features a screw balance with 18 weighted gold-coated screws, twin spring barrels, swan-neck fine adjustment, skeletonized 21kt rotor, and the exquisite finishing characteristics of the manufactory.

The most amazing part is that you don’t have to pay more for the new collection because the prices on all these brand new models will be the same as what the current retail prices are for the current collection.

Las Vegas has become a very important destination for the luxury watch market because at some point or other everyone comes to Vegas.  All the best brands in the world have very impressive boutiques to represent themselves at their finest level.  Needless to say it wasn’t easy for me to make a decision on who I was going to give the award to for Best Watch Boutique in Las Vegas for 2013.

My criterion was very simple: service, experience, knowledge and brand identity. I am proud to announce the winner for Best Watch Boutique in Las Vegas for 2013 is the Panerai Boutique at Caesars Palace Forum Shops.

This Boutique is run by Boutique Manager Gari Arevalo, who is extremely down to earth and helpful. His staff especially Jo Soranaka exemplifies passion, knowledge, personality and service. I have never been to a watch boutique like this where I feel right at home every time I walk in. No world is perfect but Gari and his team all work together to ensure you have the best possible experience and feel comfortable from the time you enter to the time you leave. Their knowledge is second to none and they are able to relate the story of Panerai in a calm cool collected way that feels genuine and engaging. The best part is not only do they have and abundant collection of the core collection, they also have some very exclusive and unique boutique only pieces on hand for collectors and enthusiast to enjoy. Since this boutique is quite small it’s very easy to see everything that goes on, so it’s really nice because you can feel the unity between all of the associates that work there.

Like all Panerai Boutiques, this Las Vegas Boutique is minimalist modern and yet has that intimate European feel. Out of all the Panerai Boutiques, this one is definitely the brightest and the location couldn’t be better, located right next to Wolfgang Pucks Spago and right across from sister brand Cartier at Caesars Palace Forum Shops. Congratulations to Gari Arevalo and his entire team for winning the award for Best watch Boutique in Las Vegas for 2013. I wish them nothing but continued success and I really hope if you have the chance when your in Las Vegas that you stop by and get an education and experience on one of the few brands that really matter, Panerai.

In the latest March 2013 issue of GQ Magazine, Mega Action Star, Bruce Willis is on the cover and sporting non other than Panerai PAM00384.  PAM00384 is an 8 Day Radiomir Ceramica. When you look at the cover you get a very small taste of what Bruce Willis is wearing on his wrist as it’s turned and you get a glimpse of the strap and profile of the watch. When you go to the actual interview  where you see  pictures of the actual cover shoot, there is this amazing picture of Mr Willis representing Panerai. There is a fantastic  clear shot of the watch, while he wearing an amazing Todd Synder suit, making this look like an ad for Panerai.

What great exposure for the brand to be able to showcase this watch on one of the biggest action stars in the world in one of the most read mens fashion magazines in the world. Ceramic watches are hard to pull off, especially with a suit, this cover shoot featuring Bruce Willis is a great example of masculine sophistication as he pulls this off flawlessly.  So just in case you thought you can only wear Panerai watches casually with jeans or shorts, think again!

Limited edition King Power Black Mamba

Yesterday, March 20, 2013, Luxury watch manufacturer Hublot had a charity event at the very cool boutique London Hotel in West Hollywood CA.

This event also marked a very historic occasion for Hublot as they named their newest brand ambassador, NBA Legend Kobe Bryant. This event shot off when Hublot Brand President, Ricardo Guadalupe presented Bryant with the Limited Edition King Power Black Mamba. This watch is limited to 250 pieces. This was followed up by an exciting basketball shoot-off with two children from After-School All Stars Los Angeles, a charitable beneficiary of the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation. Taking shots from a makeshift basketball court constructed over the hotel’s rooftop pool, the playful contest raised $30,000 for the program. Guadalupe presented the check to the Bryants and After-School All Stars as the crowd cheered.

Hublot became the official timekeeper of the LA Lakers in January and this new partnership with Kobe Bryant further strengthens the relationship and awareness of both brands on a Global level.

The case, done in King Power micro-blasted black ceramic, measures 48mm. The bezel is ceramic and titanium, with titanium screws. The lugs are composite resin. The crystal is an AR-coated sapphire as is the display back, with Kobe Bryant signature. It is water resistant to 100 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic Hublot in-house caliber HUB4248 with 28 jewels, 28,600 vph and a power reserve of 42 hours. It features a chronograph complication.

The strap is python snake sewed on black rubber with PVD titanium and ceramic deployant buckle.

Panerai price increase 2013: Not Happening for the US

The other day I speculated that Panerai will have a price increase April 1,2103 in the US based on information that they are having a price increase in Europe. In no way did I confirm this on Panerai’s behalf.  In fact I made it very clear that Panerai did not confirm this and it was my guess that Panerai was going to go up in the US .  I stand corrected and have been made aware that my guess was wrong and Panerai is not going up in the US April 1, 2013.

For those of you who felt in anyway that I miss informed you, I do apologize. With the way prices have been going up and the information I was given it seemed very much that this was what’s going to be the case.
